I've never thought of it like that. 
I would imagine that the possibility of dying by teleporting into a solid mass would be a real deterrent to any adventurer. Something drastic would need to happen before the fuzzy elf would even experiment with that.
Ick! Instead of being a smear ON a wall, he could be a smear IN a wall!

DISPLACE is the key word there. You can't DISPLACE solid molecules. They're too tightly packed and therefore less movable. It doesnt mean he takes the place of the moecules, it means he basically shoves them out of the way.

Even if the particles are more difficult to shove out of the way, it still makes me wonder how displacing water is any different from air. NC seems to have no apparent reaction to the extra exertion required to displace the water than the air... Perhaps it is done without him realizing it...

Actually, I've long wondered about this very thing, hiddencrawler. And my theory has always been that he'd displace the matter in a solid object.
The idea that his molecules would be fused with whatever substance he teleported into, is kind of based on a StarTrek understanding of teleportation. However, Kurt's power is entirely different. ST Transporters actually take things apart and put them together again, so molecular fusion is a danger. But Kurt actually makes a hole through space (similar to a StarTreck Wormhole), so it seems to me whatever he teleported into would be in more danger than him. I think he's just not eager to test this theory....
The only time we've seen him actually teleport into a solid object was when Blaze used her EM powers to thow off his power. Kitty was with him and phased them to safety.
But if she hadn't, maybe they would have made a Kurt&Kitty shaped hole in the wall.

Okay...let's use the magical science of displacement!
Okay...you've got a rock.
Place the rock on top of a tank full of air. What's it do when you let go? It "sinks" through the air and falls to the ground. It displaces the air. (if you could see the air level, you'd see the rock's volume of air spill out of the tank)
Place the rock on top of a tank full of water. What's it do when you let it go? It sicks through the water until it gets to the bottom. It displaces the water. If the tank were completely full, the exact volume of the rock's worth of water would spill out.
Place the rock on top of a tank full of hardened cement. What does it do when you let it go? It sits there, on top of the cement. It cannot displace the cement, because the molecules are too tightly packed together, making the cement solid.
Okay, now, when I was typing that all up, I thought of a better comparison!
Okay...you've got the three tanks again. This time you've got a big old syringe fulla Dr. Pepper.
Stick the needle into the tank of air and push all the Dr. Pepper into the air. The Dr. Pepper displaces the air, and sits there in the tank.
Stick the needle into the water and inject the Dr. Pepper. The Dr. Pepper takes the place of the water...it displaces it from within it.
Stick the needle into the cement (it's an adamantium needle or somethin') now try to inject it with the Dr. Pepper. You're not gonna get it outta the syringe. It cannot push the cement out of the way.
That should prove that he wouldn't be able to 'port into a solid object. He doesn't take the place of molecules, the shoves them outta the way, and without an ENORMOUS burst of energy (an BIG BIG explosion) he's not going to be able to shove solid material out of the way.
I think that the whole molecular fusion think might happen just by his molecules filling in the tiny spaces between those of the object. Either that, or it would be like the syringe, where instead of appearing inside the object, he'd simply get stuck in the other demension, or maybe he'd bounce back through that dimension to where he started or some random place.

Well, my original theory would work if he teleported into a soft solid, such as foam.
Technically you're right about requiring force to displace matter, especially more force for solid matter. BUT, remember that we don't know the properties of NC's teleporation abilities. If, let's say, his power allows him to displace ANY matter of ANY compisition, than he would, in theory, be able to complete a port into a solid. And ANY solid. This is to say, that he would be able to force his volume into any space under any pressure.
Now, in the wierd, freaky instance that you're RIGHT, (nah, that can't possibly happen,
) then my theory would be slapped out of the water, but that couldn't possibly happen!

I've never seen nightcrawler teleport into a tank of water, so i don't know if he'd cause the tank to over flow or not...
If the displacement is all within our universe, then yes it would. And there fore he wouldn't be able to teleport into a solid object. (He'd probably just bounch back or appear slightly off of his target.)
But if the displacement is compensated for by his power, then the tank wouldn't overflow and a nightcrawler amount of water would either end up in his pocket dimension or it would appear wherever he had teleported from.
If the second theory is true, then teleporting into a slab of cement would create a nightcrawler statue somewhere else.
